Call for more males to consider nursing careers
NURSES are in demand and Manukau Institute of Technology is calling for more blokes to enter the profession.
The tertiary provider last week hosted a Bachelor of Nursing Male Experience Day for Year 12 and 13 school leavers.
“We are working closely with our student liaison team, as both the Counties Manukau District Health Board and MIT believe men would benefit from nursing as a career choice,” says Dr Willem Fourie, deputy head of the Department of Nursing and Health Studies.
“There is a significant regional and national shortage within the profession of nurses, particularly males, which we need to proactively address.”
Nursing offers a stability and variety, says Dr Fourie.
“Many men see themselves on a career path that could ultimately lead to postgraduate qualifications and leadership positions in both the private and public sectors. Nursing is an attractive career choice with a diversity of experiences locally and internationally,” he says.
“For men, nursing offers flexible working hours in an environment that has few downsizings or layoffs and plenty of opportunities for professional development.”
