Travellers make better workers, say young Aussies

AUSTRALIANS believe people who have travelled make better employees, according to an online poll conducted by travel agents Contiki Holidays.

More than 73 per cent of the 654 travellers polled felt that those who had travelled made better employees, while 88 per cent believe the big overseas trip is a rite of passage.

When it comes to the balance of work and travel, 54 per cent felt they could fulfil travel dreams while having a full-time career, while 64 per cent said they would leave their full-time career to travel extensively.

The Travel and Careers poll ran throughout August and was answered by people visiting the Contiki website.

“Often we hear that we are all working harder, working longer hours and taking less of our annual leave, which is why we thought we’d ask young Australians what they thought of travel when it came to their careers,” said Tammy Marshall, managing director of Contiki Holidays.

“I think that while travel is still a priority for Australians, the once in a lifetime trip, made famous by the parents of Gen Y and Gen X is now something of the past.

“Today most young people choose to fit their travel aspirations around allocated leave, choosing to have their career and satisfy their travel dreams at the same time.”

The easiest way for Australians to work and see the world is a career in the travel industry, according to Ms Marshall.

“The trick is to be creative and flexible. There are certainly ways and means to being happy in a career and still being able to discover all the world has to offer – and it seems that many young Australians are well on their way to striking this balance.”
