SA firms search globe forworkers

THE tight labour market is forcing more South Australian companies to scout for talent overseas.

A survey by recruitment firm Talent2 found 47 per cent of about 80 SA companies questioned were resorting to global searches - with 82 per cent reporting fewer suitable available candidates than a year ago.

The time and cost involved with overseas recruiting also is encouraging SA companies to work harder at retaining staff, says Talent2 state general manager Laura Mabikafola.

"In only 12 months, the incidence of poaching key talent from other organisations by offering more money, better working conditions, training and mentoring has become far more commonplace," Ms Mabikafola said.

"The global candidate market is providing SA with a great source of talent. However, the paperwork, visas and government requirements for importing labour . . . are among the challenges companies face in sourcing overseas candidates."

Britain, South Africa, North America, New Zealand and Asia-Pacific were the main regions for overseas recruiting in SA, the SA Market Survey found.

Meanwhile, PKF Organisational Development senior consultant Angela Roman said companies needed to offer staff development and retention pathways to cope with all worker ages and stages.

"Regardless of their age, organisations should consider the needs of all employees and provide development and opportunities that are suited to the individual," Ms Roman said.
