No plans to take over education: Rudd

Federal Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd say he has no plans to take over education from the states if he wins Government.

Labor is threatening to seize control of public hospitals if its $2 billion incentive plan to improve the health system does not work.

But Mr Rudd told Channel Seven he does not plan to extend the potential takeover to education.

"In education at the moment you have, I won't say an ideal fit, but a better fit," he said.

"The Commonwealth's responsible for universities and the Commonwealth's been disinvesting in our universities for a long period of time, we've got some plans for that.

"The states primarily are responsible for schools, but not exclusively.

"Early childhood education is a bit of a mess, that's why we've put forward a half-billion dollar plan for four-year-olds."
