That dream became a reality earlier this year when she took her first step to becoming an Aircraft woman, through the Indigenous Pre-Recruit Program. The Indigenous Pre-Recruit Program is one of three pathway programs available to young Indigenous adults who want the join the Australian Defence Force (ADF). The programs aim to boost participant’s skills, knowledge and confidence and prepare them for their future careers in the ADF. Wing Commander Jonathan Lilley, an Air Force Indigenous Liaision Officer said the pro- grams help recruits learn their strengths and how to make the most of their natural abilities. “They produce young, confident, proud men and women who are ready to face any challenge and set them on their way to make their mark in the ADF”. “For all young Indigenous kids or Torres Strait Islander kids, the Air Force is a great organisation. It is a home. It is a family and we would love to have you,” said Wing Commander Lilley. Cassandra says through the program she has gained confidence and a stronger sense of self, while establishing friendships and becoming part of the ADF family. “It’s been a great experience and I’ve loved every minute of it. I can’t believe this is my job and I’m here having a great time and I’m getting paid to do so”. Wing Commander Lilley said the Air Force has a lot to offer those looking to join. “We will train you and look after you…you’ll get to have experiences not many people get to have. You’ll get to travel the world, operate some of the most sophisticated equipment and all at the same time you’ll get paid. So come and join us”. Cass has now completed the Indigenous Pre-Recruit Program Pathways to a Defence Career and says “I’m really looking forward to completing my basic training and going onto to become a Communications Information Systems Controller”.
