Students undertak- ing a School- Based Apprenticeship/ Traineeship will generally work with host employers for one to two days a week and on other days undertake their VCE or VCAL studies. Spend- ing time in an actual workshop gives students a realistic hands-on experi- ence so they can make an informed decision on whether to continue into a full-time apprenticeship. There are many benefits to undertaking a school based apprenticeship/trainee- ship including developing important employability skills while undertak- ing formal training with a Registered Training Organisation and completing their VCAL / VCE studies. CASE STUDY Brandon was in high school and doing Year 11 VCAL while studying VETAutomotive. Brandon had undertaken work experience in Year 10 in a small automotive workshop and this provided a huge amount of exposure to different cars and types of work. Although Brandon enjoyed his time, he decided he would like to see what it was like to compare different workshops by doing additional work experience in a dealership, and did some work experience in a larger dealership where he worked mostly on one make of car. Although Brandon could have taken part in Structural Workplace Learning (SWL or “work placement”) in Year 11, he decided to apply to VACC to do a school based appren- ticeship/traineeship. He felt his time spent doing the automotive VET and work experience had helped him to make the decision to move to the next step in his chosen career path. Brandon applied online to VACC (a very simple process) and was asked to come in for an interview. Brandon’s parents were encouraged to support him by accompanying him to the interview, as this is a time for them to speak to the VACC and ask any ques- tions they might have. On completion of the interview, Brandon was quickly notified of his successful outcome (this takes place within 10 working days of the interview). VACC organised everything. Brandon was given an appointment for his medical, and following that he was placed in a workshop near public transport and his TAFE enrolment and attendance dates were arranged. This made the whole process very easy for him and provided peace of mind for his parents. Brandon had been provided with a VACC Field Manager to streamline the process and this support continued with his Field Manager coming to his workplace on a regular basis. The Field Manager is there to assist with any issues that may arise while monitoring the progress of an apprentice’s automotive apprenticeship/traineeship. Things have gone very well for Brandon. He has successfully com- pleted Year 12, he loves his studies and workplace, has made new friends, learnt new skills and obtained his driver’s licence. With the help of VACC and his Field Manager, he has made the transition from being a student and has begun his full-time automotive apprenticeship.
